The Drabble Day Challenge is a weekly challenge hosted by http://thewriteaholicblog.wordpress.com/ and it involves writing a Drabble (a short story of 100 words, plus or minus 5) based around a particular prompt. This week’s prompt was “DELAY”.
The liner ‘Gargantuan’ swung around the gravity well of Jupiter and was catapulted sunwards, towards a distant Earth. The passengers watched the giant planet disappear behind them and then retired to their cabins; there would be little else to see for weeks.
Eighteen days later, as the ship sped through the asteroid belt, the proximity detector went offline.
So too, did the backup…
There was a grinding impact that sent the, miraculously un-destroyed, ship tumbling.
Eventually, after the spinning had been halted and the situation assessed, the Captain addressed the ship. “Uhm… I’m afraid there is going to be a slight delay…”
