The Drabble Day Challenge is a weekly challenge hosted by http://thewriteaholicblog.wordpress.com/ and it involves writing a Drabble (a short story of 100 words, plus or minus 5) based around a particular prompt. This week the prompt was “GARDEN”.
Charaak sat on his haunches, patiently waiting for the spores to germinate. He had tried a new growing substrate and was quietly confident of good results.
There was a rapid movement beneath the surface and the appressorium broke through into the light, writhing snakelike as it grew. A purple fruiting body already beginning to form.
Around the base of the new growth, a strange red goo was pooling; seeping from inside the formerly motile growing substrate. Whatever it was, it seemed to be the perfect food.
Charaak wondered if more motiles could be found in that strange metal tube that had fallen from the sky…
