Crossing The Finish Line

Well! November was a busy month what with upheaval at work, publishing “8 Million Stories” AND NaNoWriMo.

In the end I was so overwhelmed by things that I had to crawl over the finish line during a conference on the last day! For those interested, I managed 50,007 words (don’t say ANYTHING!). In fact, I thought that what I was writing was actually a novella, but, according to both the Hugos and the Nebulas:

Novel: a work of 40,000 words or more

Novella: a work of at least 17,500 words but under 40,000 words

Novelette: a work of at least 7,500 words but under 17,500 words

Short story: a work of under 7,500 words

So I am actually writing a novel after all (albeit a short one by today’s standards…). I estimate that it will come in around 60,000 words when it is finished, which is probably enough for the audience I am aiming at.

I can say that NaNoWriMo was well worth the effort as I now have the first draft completed of my novel “Talatu” which I plan to work on over the next couple of months and get finished by March 2011. It is a Young Adult tale of a 16 year old girl of Nigerian descent who is part of the first interstellar colonisation mission. She gets captured/kidnapped by the indigenous intelligent life and it falls to her to justify the humans place on Onyx.

As I said, November was a very busy month and so I can definitely say that I would not have done this without the push provided by NaNoWriMo.

Now I can get back to some of my other commitments (Librivox, StarShipSofa etc.) while I scale back my writing from 1667 words a day to something more manageable!
